Visual Communication for Nonprofits and Global Workers
Hey there! My name is Rob Wilson. I’m a communications director and filmmaker with a heart to serve Nonprofits and Global Workers around the world who would like to have some help with their communications.
Visual Communications includes things like film & video, photography, graphic design, and websites — oftentimes, these are the things media agencies or specialized freelancers are hired to do for larger organizations, who have the budget and margin to invest in professional services. They can build big campaigns for their supporters and donors to give, because they know the future results of the campaign outweigh the steep overhead cost of producing it.
But what about the organizations that aren’t at that level? How can a Global Worker doing ministry in Southeast Asia find more people interested in supporting the work God has called them to do? Or an organization running a school in a rural village in Zambia share their story to get more resources & teachers to be able to expand their capacity to accept more students, so that more than just one child from a family of six can have an education (and in turn, a future)?
I’ve seen the tension Nonprofits and Global Workers have between wanting to do more and taking it one day at a time; the tension between investing in something, like a video or a website, that may or may not pay off.
Having directly worked with nonprofits, churches, and global workers for the past 10 years, I want to freely share my insights and experiences from a visual communications standpoint. No gatekeeping, no paywall — just resourcing folks who help others. What we do is deeply rooted in relationship — the impact of helping just one person versus a whole people group is the same.
So that’s where my heart is at, and the encouragement from my mentor was to put pen to paper... and I’ve taken that quite literally! Through these publications, I’ll be sharing topics like:
   • How to film an update video that churches will want to show their congregation;
   • What kinds of photos help (or hurt) your website;
   • How to use social media as a front door to build connections with people interested in what you do;
   • And everyone’s favourite question to ask me: what camera equipment should I buy (hint: your phone is probably good enough, it’s your lighting & sound).
Any knowledge or experience, I think, that would help you with visual communications. I encourage you to follow along and ask me questions, because we’re doing this together! My goal is to write these articles routinely and write more frequently in slower seasons of work. Feel free to share it with others you know serving in ministry or nonprofit work.
Thanks for serving where you are. Keep telling the stories that matter, and may the work you’re doing be seen. Grace and peace.
Here to serve,
Rob
